The impact that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit had led to a dramatic increase in the influence the early Christians had on society and those around them.
Acts 2:41 ‘Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.’
The influence they enjoyed was supernatural and profound. They had no sound system, lights and no camera’s. They did not even have a beautiful building facility where they could ‘create’ an ideal worship experience in which people could be moved. The Holy Spirit moved the people. The scripture tells us that as a result of the effect of the Holy Spirit that many gladly received the word and many were gladly baptized. It goes on to say that in one day 3000 people came to salvation in Christ. They did not need to force, beg or coerce the people. When the Holy Spirit comes upon us the same thing can happen. Our influence can be extended and many can be touched and gladly receive it.
THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES AND CONSTANT LIFESTYLE CHANGES OCCUR.
As a result of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit it led to change in the way they lived their lives.
Acts 2:42 ‘They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.’
There were 4 lifestyle changes that resulted. These were not just ‘flash in the pan’ changes. The Bible tells us that they ‘continued steadfastly’. That means that it was an ongoing thing that they did and they did this with conviction and devotion. Some translations use the term ‘devoted themselves’ as it tries to convey the message. Here are the four things:
1. ‘…..in the apostles’ doctrine….’
They were not swayed by other teachings doing the rounds. They were not tossed around by every wind of doctrine. They stayed true to what the apostles had taught them.
2. ‘….. and fellowship….’
Fellowship is a vital component of our spiritual lives. It is not something to be neglected.
3. ‘…. and in breaking bread….’
The times when we have communion are very important and they remain a constant reminder of what God has done for us. Don’t miss these occasions when your church celebrates this and have communion in your small groups and in your homes.
4. ‘…. and in prayers ….’
Don’t neglect your prayer life. Make this vital component a part of your life.
