7 THINGS THAT DISTURB AND ROB US OF OUR PEACE

2. THE DARKNESS OF NIGHT.
Sometimes we go through times or seasons of darkness. It is as if the darkness comes and envelopes us. Winston Churchill used the phrase ‘black dog’ to describe periods of depression or low spirits he experienced. He’d refer to these episodes as having the ‘black dog’ on his back.
This was the man who led England to victory in the Second World War. He inspired a nation and told them ‘we will never surrender’, and yet knew the darkness of night that could penetrate his life and rob him of his strength. Perhaps you are feeling like your light has been snuffed out and darkness seems to surround you. If your peace has been taken away from you because of the darkness that has invaded your soul – there is hope. The Lord can come and light your lamp again.

Psalm 18:28‘For You, O LORD, light my lamp; my God lights up my darkness.’

THE WEIGHT OF SIN.

Sin is a weight that comes onto our lives and steals our peace and joy. Perhaps there are things that you have done that you know were not right. The weight of sin is a very heavy burden that brings death into our lives.

Romans 6:23‘For the wages of sin is death…’

It brings shame that can hold us captive. The weight of sin is also something that separates us from God.

Isaiah 59:2‘But your iniquities (sins) have separated you from your God…’

These things need to be dealt with so that we can enjoy the freedom and the peace that God wants to give us as a gift.

Hebrews 12:1‘Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.’

4. BROKENNESS.
The Bible speaks of a condition it calls broken heartedness. Broken heartedness refers to a state of intense grief, a feeling of deep sadness and emotional pain, often associated with a feeling of emptiness or despair. If you have faced real brokenness, you will know what I am speaking about. Brokenness makes us weak at a fundamental level and causes us to question everything including what is wrong and right. It takes our peace because we are disturbed and troubled at a very deep level. But even this is not too great for God to heal and deliver us from.

Psalm 34:18a‘The LORD is close to the brokenhearted.’
